Market research and investment packaging for AI products
From competitor maps and patent landscape to MVP scope, economics and an investor page — a startup packaged for the conversation with capital, inconvenient findings included.
Context
An idea becomes investable when someone can see the market, the wedge, the MVP and the economics in one coherent story. Founders usually have the idea and none of the packaging — so the conversation with capital never gets past the pitch. Worse, most packaging is advocacy: it hides the failure modes an experienced investor will find in the first hour of diligence.
The flagship engagement of this methodology was an autonomous AI capture and media platform. The mandate was explicit: find out how unique the concept really is, including everything inconvenient — dead predecessors, patent mines, regulatory walls — and package the venture around what survives.
Approach
The research runs as five parallel tracks, each an independent inquiry with its own angle: direct competitors and products, the existing market for automated venue-based capture, EU and national drone regulation, the patent and academic landscape, and a standalone investor verdict with unit-economics checks. Every conclusion is tied to a primary source; where a figure is a vendor's self-claim or an estimate, it is flagged as such, and questions left open by exhausted search budgets are listed rather than papered over.
Where two tracks produced contradictory answers on a critical legal question, both positions were documented side by side and marked for counsel — a disagreement surfaced is worth more than a false consensus.
Research architecture
The central artifact is an interactive HTML research document in six parts — competitors, technology, market, regulation, verdict, conclusions — with over twenty-five numbered sections. It maps the category's graveyard (three failed attempts at the same business model, analyzed to their endings), audits nine claimed elements of uniqueness against published science and active patents including expiry horizons, and sizes TAM/SAM/SOM bottom-up by venue category with suitability judgments per category.
The verdict section converts research into decisions: unit economics with payback under realistic assumptions, three business versions ranked by survival probability, and a 90-day sequence of kill-shot experiments ordered by rising cost — run strictly in order, stop at the first failure.
Investment packaging
On top of the research sits the package itself: an eight-part product concept document covering architecture, safety model, proof-of-concept staging, operations and economics; a 16-slide investor deck; and interactive investor-facing HTML pages that read on any device without hosting dependencies. The same discovery that defines the MVP feeds the investor narrative, so the two never contradict each other under questioning.
MVP scope is derived from the validation plan, not from the feature wish-list: what ships first is what the cheapest kill-shot experiment needs.
Outcome
A methodology validated across the studio's own and client projects: startup packaging for an investor, an idea audit, a competitor and patent map, MVP scope, a financial model and a product presentation. Its distinguishing property is honesty as a feature — a package that states its own risks survives diligence, and a research process that can kill a bad idea for tens of thousands instead of millions is a deliverable in itself.
